Abstract

The study of violent extremism in the wake of ISIS has largely been devoted to the process of radicalization and strategies to counter and de-radicalize extremists. However, little has been written on the subject of Diversion - early, upstream interventions aimed at deflecting individuals from a pathway of radicalization. This volume addresses this gap in scholarship by analysing the Diversion strategies being deployed worldwide, aimed at diverting or deflecting individuals, and communities, from the path of radicalization. These include Diversion methods used among social workers, teachers, counselors and the police both in relation to individuals and communities. Case studies range across the Global North and South, presented by both academic and practitioner contributors, and address different branches of radicalization, the variety of strategies used as Diversion, and the results of these interventions

Abstract

Terrorism and radicalization are increasingly dominating sociological, political and cultural concerns. This book explores how the problems causing violent extremism are local, and therefore, so are the solutions. The concept of countering violent extremism delivers community and youth developmental projects as a process of social engineering that aims to discourage, disengage and de-incentivise vulnerable young people on the verge of radical political views. This book aims to understand the concept of countering violent extremism from a global perspective using case studies from different countries, while examining the host of issues it carries.

Abstract

This book offers a multifaceted, analytical account of counterterrorism argumentative speech. Traditionally, existing scholarship in this field of research has taken a selective focus on issues and actors, concentrating mainly on US state discourse after 9/11. However, this approach ignores the fact that there was counterterrorism speech before 9/11, and that there are other countries and other actors who also actively engage in the counterterrorism discursive field, both within and outside of the Western world. Addressing several thematic, chronological and methodological gaps in the current literature, this book offers a dynamic perspective on counterterrorism argumentative speech. Over the course of the volume, the authors tackle the following key issues : first, historical and cultural continuity and change. Second, the phenomenology of counterterrorism speech : its nature, instrumentalisation, implications and interactions between the various actors involved. The third theme is the anatomy of counterterrorism speech; namely its political, cultural and linguistic constitutive elements. Employing a multi-disciplinary framework, the authors explore these issues through a geographically and historically diverse range of case studies, resulting in a book that broadens the perspective of counterterrorism argumentation analysis.

Abstract

Hamed El-Said investigates the emergence of new, 'soft' approaches to counter violent extremists, generally known as counter radicalization and deradicalization programmes (Counter-de-Rad). This is the first work to develop a holistic framework which will allow policy makers and practitioners to better understand conditions conducive to violent extremism, and to better design and effectively implement such programmes in the future. This book, supported and facilitated by a wealth of primary research and consideration of all stakeholders, addresses cultural and legal differences between countries while developing its holistic approach. In addition, the research focuses on and identifies conditions conducive to either the success or the failure of Counter-de-Rad programmes. Finally, it provides a new, broader approach to evaluate the performance of such programmes, one that goes beyond the current narrow models which treat recidivism rates as the main indicator of success or failure.

Abstract

What can be done to warn about and organize political action to prevent genocide and mass atrocities ? The international contributors to this volume are either experts or practitioners, often both, who have contributed in substantial ways to analyzing high-risk situations, recommending preventive policies and actions, and in several instances helping to organize remedial actions. Whereas current literature on the prevention of genocide is theoretically well-grounded, this book explores what can be done, and has been done, in real-world situations. Recommendations and actions are rooted in a generation of experience, based on solid historical, comparative, and empirical research and with a grounding in quantitative methods. This volume examines historical cases to understand the general causes and processes of mass violence and genocide, and engages with ongoing genocidal crises including Darfur and Syria, as well as other forms of related violence such as terrorism and civil conflict.
